Xbox 720 is real and its release is nearing. Earlier this month, “Major Nelson” aka Larry Hryb, Xbox’s director of programming, posted a countdown clock to the event on his blog, hinting at a major announcement coming at E3 in June. It’s widely expected that the new Xbox 720 release date will coincide with E3 this year in June. Microsoft has yet to officially confirm the likes of Xbox 720 or the Xbox 720 release date, but they have certainly hinted at it.
Today a new leak from VGLeaks, and reported on by TechCrunch, offers a look at some of the computing power being built into the Xbox 720. And according to those leaks, the new Xbox 720 console includes:
8 CPU cores at 1.6GHz, with a custom 800MHz graphics processor in the GPU. There are 8GB of RAM on board, with 32MB of fast embedded SRAM at double the throughput speed, and a 50GB-capable 6x Blu-ray drive. Wireless connectivity protocols include both Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct, and there’s still a Gigabit Ethernet port for gamers with low latency multiplayer demands. It’ll also come with USB 3.0 and HDMI 1.4a, which supports 3D over HDMI, Ethernet, audio return channels and 4K resolution. And just last week at CES Microsoft demoed “a proof of concept system” that could be the future of gaming. IllumiRoom technology combines the virtual and physical worlds of a TV and living room by using a Kinect and a projector. Imagine playing the newest Xbox console in your entire living room surrounded by the entire game. That is a true augmented reality experience.
In a report on tech speculation and rumor site SemiAccurate, the Xbox 720 – which has allegedly been codenamed Kryptos internally – has test chips that are currently in development. Both SemiAccurate and Bloomberg say Microsoft is shooting hard to release Xbox 720 in September 2013. Which is slightly later than the June Xbox 720 release date, but that could be when the Xbox 720 hits shelves. Either way, you can almost guarantee that the Xbox 720 will be in stores for the next holiday season.
We do know that Xbox’s major competitor, Sony Playstation, is also planning a new game console in 2013, the PS4. It’s been over six years since we’ve seen any new gaming consoles from these companies so it is certainly about time!
Check out some of the PS4 and Xbox 720 photo mocks. *Take these with a grain of salt. They’re artistic mock-ups.
What do you think of the Xbox 720? Will you be first inline to purchase one later this year?
